Rich "Goose" Gossage Elected To Baseball Hall Of Fame (VIDEO)

Legendary Relief Pitcher Rich "Goose" Gossage was the only player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame according to Major League Baseball. With the dark stare and the intimidating mustache, Goose was both relief pitcher and intimidator. He would stare down at batters, and then throw heat at them, causing many to strike out. The former Padre and Yankee, earned nearly 86% of the votes while eventual Hall of Famer Jim Rice came up just 16 votes shy of induction. Other notables: Mark McGuire finished well out of the running with less than 24% while Andre Dawson was less than 10% from induction at 65.9%. The full list appears below.

Gossage was known for his fierce demeanor in an era where relief pitcher were pitching 2 and 3 innings and were starting to be used with regularity. Yankee Owner George Steinbenner had this to say about his former player. "The Baseball Hall of Fame was really on the ball today in their selection of my close friend Goose Gossage," he said in a statement. "Goose was a fierce competitor and one of the all-time great pitchers, who in his career set a new standard for relief pitching. The New York Yankees are very proud of his achievement and I, personally, would like to congratulate him and his family on this wonderful honor!" Well done Hall of Fame!
Induction ceremonies will take place July 27, 2008 in picturesque Cooperstown, NY on the shores of Otsego Lake.
