Breaking News!! People in London speak English. I know, who knew?? Obviously Channing Crowder, Miami Dolphin Linebacker didn't know until this week. He told the Palm Beach Post that he wouldn't be able to find London on a map. "I couldn't find London on a map if they didn't have the names of the countries," Crowder told the paper. "I swear to God. I don't know what nothing is. I know Italy looks like a boot. I learned that. I know (Washington Redskins linebacker) London Fletcher. We did a football camp together. So I know him. That's the closest thing I know to London. He’s black, so I’m sure he’s not from London. I’m sure that’s a coincidental name.” This advertisement was for the University of Florida. Send your kid there and they will learn Italy looks like a boot. Thanks Channing, you are one smart guy! Special props go to Mud Free's Eye on the Internet Reporter C-Dub for bringing this to my attention...made me choke on a scone when he told me.
College Football upsets of the day part #2. UCONN, the improbable leader of the Big East beat #10 South Florida 22-15. The last 2 drives of the game for USF went all the way inside the 5 yard lines both times and they only came away with 3 points. USF has been exposed the past couple of weeks and UCONN has had the light shone on it, though the win last week was marred by the Big East calling out the officials for making a bad call on a punt play. In the SEC #20 Georgia beat #9 Florida 42-30 to make a big impact on that Conference. We could have 4-5 new teams in the Top 10 by this time tomorrow when the new BCS Rankings are released. We will keep you updated as ASU, OSU, and Kansas all play this evening in some other great tests for their teams.
In College Football today, only a few of the big games are done and already we have teams making noise. #5 Oregon beat USC 24-17 to stake their claim as the best team in the Pac-10. In the SEC, Mississippi State upset the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, 31-14. As of the time of this article, UCONN is up on #10 South Florida 19-12. More games to come and for this fan's sake, hopefully more upsets are on the way as well. Just a thought. Who ever would have seen UCONN vs. South Florida being a major game in the BCS a couple of years ago? Wow.

In NASCAR Nextel Cup qualifying at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on Friday Night, Greg Biffle secured the Pole Position for the Pep Boys Auto 500 on Sunday, his first such pole in over a year. Driving his Lumber Liquidators Ford #16 he was able to nip Kurt Busch for the top spot. Biffle has been on a tear as of late, finishing in the top 10 in 3 of his last 5 starts since failing to qualify for the Chase for the Cup. Jimmie Johnson is sitting in 6th and Jeff Gordon 8th. Clint Bowyer who is currently third in the Chase, 115 points behind Gordon, qualified 26th. The rest of those in the Chase are as follows, fighting teammates Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth were 16th and 17th, with Denny Hamlin 18th, Kyle Busch 19th, Martin Truex Jr. 20th Jeff Burton 28th, defending race winner Tony Stewart 30th and Kevin Harvick 34th. Jimmie Johnson sits just 53 points behind Gordon as we come down to the last 4 races.
I got so excited about Boston College's come from behind victory Thursday night that I didn't even mention the World Series. Boston's 2-1 win was a game of beauty. First we have offense from the Red Sox along with great pitching in Game 1. Then we have a pitcher's duel in Game 2. Hopefully the Rockies can extend the Series when the go home on Saturday. Curt Schilling impressed even Yankee fans Thursday, pitching 5 1/3 innings of 4 hit baseball. Matt Holiday accounted for 4 out of the 5 Rockies' hits and got thrown out at first leading off the bag in the 8th inning. Not much of an offensive show yet for Colorado.
In Game 3 Josh Fogg takes on Daisuke Matsuzaka. This is a game that could come down to the lack of a DH. This will affect the lineup that Boston is used to playing with all year. Who would you take out of the lineup? This is a hard one, but I think it changes Boston just a little bit, and with the Rockies being home, I like the Rockies to win 7-3.
Another football weekend is upon us and it already started out in great fashion on Thursday Night with Boston College coming back and beating Virginia Tech 14-10. This Saturday gives us more great matchups and a chance to see more problems arise for the Top 25 BCS Teams. The premier game is The Ohio State Buckeyes traveling to Happy Valley to face Penn State and Joe Paterno. This prime time football game looks like trouble for the Buckeyes. Look for a new #1. Penn State wins 27-17. On the West Coast we see USC taking on the Oregon Ducks in a game that could have an impact on the Pac-10, especially if Arizona State loses along the way. I like the athleticism and speed of Oregon and as Colin Cowherd of ESPN Radio said today, USC has too many questions. Oregon will win 41-27. In the Big East No. 6 West Virginia goes to Rutgers in a battle of running games. Look for Rutgers defense to be unable to stop the Mountaineers and lose at home 42-35.
|The new 2007-2008 College Mens Basketball was released by ESPN/USAToday today. We get a good look at the top teams and top conferences in Mens Hoop and gets us salivating for the early season matchups and tourneys. Who's your team? Mine is Syracuse, and with a great recruiting class and some starters returning from their, ahem, NIT team from last year, hopes are strong around the 'Cuse that can make us forget about the football team and do something great in the Big East.|

In a Thursay Night nationally televised game on ESPN, the Va. Tech Hokies(#8) dominated the Boston College Eagles(#2) for 57 minutes and 49 seconds. Too bad for the Hokies games are 60 minutes long as the Eagles beat Va. Tech 14-10, scoring at 2:11 left in the game, then recovering an onsides kick and scoring again with just :11 left. Week in and week out the #2 team in the polls has gone down to defeat at the hands of a lower rated team and it looked like it would happen again until Heisman Trophy Candidate Matt Ryan led his team on 2 scoring drives. This game in Blacksburg, Va was played on a wet and cold night in the Blue Ridge Mountains and showed the talent of the ACC. Just a few years ago, the "experts" talked about the mistake BC made by going to the ACC from the Big East, that is was a bad geographic fit for them. Tonight they laugh in everyone's face as they are #2 in the Country and undefeated.

According to various news service reports, Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig is mulling the possibility of handing down suspensions for the use of Steroids and HGH, even prior to the changes in rules. This is the opportunity to use the "Best Interest of Baseball" clause that the commissioner's office has used in the past. Look, its time that Bud Selig admit that he and baseball did not do enough, but if evidence comes forward like it has concerning Gary Matthews Jr., Paul Byrd, and Rick Ankiel, then he will suspend them accordingly. Look, we all wish this was behind us as fans, but it is NOT! NFL Commish Roger Goddell has taken a tough stance even though it was overlooked by his predecessor. I know, I know. You are saying, "Its Selig's fault that he didn't do anything about it!" Right, but if evidence comes out that players were cheating and he does nothing to those current players, he would be damaging the game further. Act now and act tough! Stop the embarrassment of those being caught and send a clear message that if you cheat or have cheated then you will be punished!
Josh Beckett came to the mound in the first inning and struck out all 3 batters he faced...and that was it. It seemed from their that the Red Sox fans and players got an emotional charge out of that and the Colorado Rockies realized what they were in for. The end result was a 13-1 blowout that even Eric Gagne looked good in forthe Red Sox. Boston accumulated 17 hits, but more importantly had 3 runs by the time the 1st inning ended. Jeff Francis started for the Rockies, allowing 6 runs in 4 innings worth of work. All around a drubbing by the Red Sox, pretty much what this writer expected.
Tonight, Curt Schilling will pitch against Ubaldo Jimenez. Look for the Red Sox to keep things going, but the game to be closer. Red Sox win 4-2 Tonight, 8pm on Fox!

According to the San Diego Office of Emergency Services, there have been 1300 homes that have been destroyed by the wild fires that have hit Southern California. Sometimes, life gets in the way of sports. The San Diego Chargers have been adversely affected by these same wild fires. Chargers QB Philip Rivers, RB LaDainian Tomlinson, and TE Antonio Gates are among 40 Charger players and/or coaches that have had to leave their homes. All 3 players left in the early morning hours on Monday in order to escape the potential devastation. "It was crazy," Rivers said. "It was so windy and so ashy and so smelly about midnight that we went ahead and got out of there then," said Rivers, the father of three young girls. He said he heard from Tomlinson and tight end Antonio Gates at about 4:30 a.m. Monday that they were leaving their homes. The NFL is scrambling to find a home for the game between the Chargers and Houston Texans. Qualcomm Stadium is being used as a shelter area for those pushed out of their homes. The Chargers are currently in Phoenix where they are using the Arizona Cardinals facilities to practice while the Cardinals enjoy their bye week. The BYU vs. San Diego State game scheduled for Saturday has already been postponed until December 1st.
"Out of my great respect for Mr. Torre, I have refrained from comment until he had a chance to address the public.
"In my eyes, Joe Torre is more than a Hall of Fame manager. He is a friend for life, and the relationship we have shared has helped shape me in ways that transcend the game of baseball. His class, dignity, and the way he respected those around him--from ballplayers to batboys--are all qualities that are easy to admire, but difficult to duplicate.
"I have known Mr. Torre for a good majority of my adult life, and there has been no bigger influence on my professional development. It was a privilege to play for him on the field, and an honor to learn from him off the field."
Meanwhile, in Tampa as the Yankees turn...former Yankee first baseman and current bench coach, Don Mattingly, interviewed first with Brian Cashman and the operations team and then with the Steinbrenner god-head. This follows by a day Joe Girardi interviewing and precedes first base coach Tony Pena who will interview tomorrow for the position. We will keep you updated.
Did anyone predict this matchup, Boston Red Sox vs. Colorado Rockies, at the start of the baseball season? Look, first of all so everyone knows I am a die hard Yankee fan. But I believe I can be objective. Josh Beckett has been a king in the Playoffs and World Series in his career. David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez have slugging percentages in the 500+ range. I love the heart and the fun that is the Colorado Rockies, however, I believe the Red Sox have too much experience and play in a superior league than the Rockies. Could the Rockies do it? Absolutely! I am rooting for them. But do you come here for facts or pipe dreams? I believe the Red Sox win it all in 6 games.
As far as Game 1. Think that the pitching of Beckett and the excitement of the World Series gets to the Rockies. Red Sox win game 1, 7-2. Just hope Eric Gagne doesn't pitch for the Red Sox.
Note: Tim Wakefield has been left off the World Series Roster. Who would you rather have, Gagne or Wakefield. Easy for me, Wakefield every time!
9. San Diego Chargers - They didn't play last week, and this week the Malibu fires have forced them out of San Diego and into Phoenix for practices. As long as they don't get distracted by evacuations and site changes, they should move up this list quite nicely.
6. Tennessee Titans - Even with Vince Young on the bench they find a way to win. Kerry Collins is playing well and when Vince Young comes back, they should be even better.
5. NY Giants - They seem to playing like a, here's a concept, team. You don't hear about players complaining and causing issues like in years past. Was Tiki Barber the problem?
4. Green Bay Packers - The Packers concern me the more I look at the numbers. They are 32nd in the league in rushing. Brett Favre will take the team only so far. They need to find a running game or have a tuff second half to the season.
3. Dallas Cowboys - A nice impressive win against the Vikings on Sunday was a good bounce back game after the loss to New England. They are easily the top team in the NFC, for now.
2. Indianapolis Colts - With a methodic win over the Jaguars on Monday Night, they let the football world know that there is more than one unbeaten in the NFL. Will they look past the Panthers this Sunday?
1. New England Patriots - Here we are. A game against Washington and then a game against the Colts. Anyone going to watch that game?? Better yet, is anyone going to watch either of the other two games on at the same time.
The Colts remained atop the AFC and NFL with the Patriots as they went into Jacksonville and put a spanking on the Jaguars, 29-7. The Colts, known for their high octane offense, stopped a good Jacksonville offense and sent a message as well. "The whole finesse thing that people have with us, it's a great myth, really," insisted Colts middle linebacker Gary Brackett. "But if people want to keep having that perception, hey, let them. It's good for us. Because we know the reality. Dwight Freeney scored his first career safety and the defense knocked out QB David Garrard who will be out 2 weeks with an ankle injury. Stay tuned...some more great NFL to be played!
